Masculinity as Performance in Japan

　The short movie above is the peformance named “I AM WILD”,played　by a male comedian called Sugichan, one of the most popular comedian in contemporary Japan.The idea that feminity is a performance has a long history in Japan. We can trace it at least to the Kabuki theater in Edo epoque.This idea in completely rooted in contemporary Japan and we can see many male talents who play feminity on TV. One of the reason why the peformance of Sugichan named “I AM WILD”has become so popular in contemporary Japan is, I guess, that he plays a “parody” of masculinity in modern Japanese society, revealing not only for the fans of Takaraduka but also for the general audience that masculinity is also a “performance”just as feminity is a performance.
